Welcome to Bentley Model UN!

The Bentley Model United Nations Program is a group of students interested in international affairs who research topics concerning the UN and then put this knowledge to use by hosting two conferences for High School and Middle School students.

High School Conference 2004

Every January, the secretariat of our conference spends one week at the United Nations in New York. During this week, our members are briefed by members of the UN secretariat, permanent representatives to the United Nations, as well as by other groups who figure prominently into the affairs of the United Nations.

High School Conference 2004

Dear Principal/Department Head:

On behalf of the Bentley College Model United Nations, I am pleased to announce the Sixteenth Annual Bentley College High School Model United Nations Conference will take place at Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts from May 28-30, 2004. Over the past sixteen years the Bentley College Model United Nations (BMUN) has enhanced the lives of thousands of students across New England and the East Coast, earning a reputation as one of the premiere High School conferences in the nation.

For many years, the Model United Nations programs across the United States have given students opportunities to learn about the United Nations, the countries that are represented in it, and the important global issues discussed. Not only have these programs opened student’s eyes to international topics, but they have also taught students the tools of diplomacy for problem solving in a global society. This year has had its extraordinary events and the topics posed at this year’s conference will certainly reflect them.

At the conference, we will have simulations of three UN bodies:
General Assembly
Security Council
Economic and Social Council

Ideally, students will be paired as a delegation representing the assigned country in each simulation. Therefore, a full delegation will consist of at least two, but no more than six students, depending on the simulations the assigned country are in.

In this website you will find all the registration materials as well as information regarding the conference. We will be providing a Faculty Advisor’s Guide to help educators prepare themselves and their students for participation at the conference, which you will receive with the topic summaries in February. Please note that you may register for the conference up until April 1, 2004. However, country assignments will be given on a first come basis. The registration material should be sent to Bentley College along with the deposit of $75 per delegate.

Please review the registration materials and contact me if you have any questions. We look forward with great enthusiasm to welcoming you and your students to the Bentley College High School Model United Nations Conference in May.

Sincerely,

Lauren Case

Middle School Conference

Bentley College Model United Nations cordially invites you to attend its 7th annual Middle School Conference to be held on February 28, 2004.

Model United Nations programs provide an excellent experimental environment where students role-play assigned countries and debate important selected topics with their peers. At the Middle School UN Conference, students grades six through eight will have the opportunity to experience a model of a real United Nations setting in the relaxed learning environment of Bentley College.

In assigned committee, student delegates will assume the role of diplomats. Through caucusing, lobbying, resolution writing, and formal debate. They will represent their assigned country as they work with committee members to attempt to find solutions facing our world today.

General Assembly

International Tribunal for persecution for situations regarding humanitarian law.

Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

Trade barriers and subsidies.

Security Council

The situation in North Korea.

What is a delegation?
A delegation consists of 2-6 students representing one country. If a school sends more than 6 delegates, it will be assigned more than one country to represent.

Background papers will be provided to delegates for each topic and will be mailed after the registration is received.
